Mahjong Solitaire
Mahjong Solitaire replaces cards with 144 beautiful tiles stacked in the classic turtle formation. Find and remove matching pairs of "free" tiles — tiles with no tile on top and at least one open side — until the whole board is cleared. Unlike many Mahjong sites, every deal here is generated to be completely solvable.
Mahjong Solitaire Rules
- A tile is free when no tile rests on top of it and its left or right side is open.
- Click two matching free tiles to remove them as a pair.
- Number tiles (Dots, Bamboo, Characters), winds and dragons match identical tiles only.
- Any Flower matches any other Flower, and any Season matches any other Season.
- Clear all 144 tiles to win.
Mahjong Strategy
Work from the top down and unlock the long middle rows early — the highest tiles and the far left/right end tiles block the most neighbours. When three copies of a tile are free at once, pause: the pairing you choose decides whether the fourth copy can ever be freed.
Prefer matches that open new tiles over matches that merely look convenient, and use the Hint button sparingly — reading the board yourself is the whole game. Stuck with no matches? Undo a few pairs and choose differently; since every deal is solvable, a winning line always exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Mahjong deal really solvable?
Yes. Deals are constructed by placing pairs in reverse play order, which mathematically guarantees at least one way to clear the entire board.
Why can't I select a certain tile?
It is not free: either another tile rests on top of it, or both its left and right sides are blocked by neighbouring tiles. Blocked tiles appear slightly dimmed.
How do Flowers and Seasons match?
The four Flower tiles are all different but match each other freely, and the same applies to the four Season tiles.
Is this the same game as classic four-player Mahjong?
No — it only borrows the tiles. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle, invented in its computer form in the 1980s.
